Padang, W Sumatra (ANTARA News) - Indonesia and China have extended cooperation in the marine and fishery fields to boost the development in the marine and fishery technology field.

The extended cooperation was marked by the visit of Administrator of the Chinese State Oceanic Administration (SOA)Liu Cigui and his delegation to the Bungus marine station and Indonesia- China Ocean and Climate Center (ICOCC) in Padang, West Sumatra Province, Wednesday (April 27), according to a press statement from the marine affairs and fisheries ministry (KKP) Thursday.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on marine cooperation was also signed by SOA and KKP in Jakarta, Thursday.

Researches and development conducted under the MOU would strengthen Indonesia`s geopolitical position as a noted maritime nation internationally, the ministry`s Secretary General Gellwynn Jusuf said in the press statement.

Both countries have initiated cooperation in the marine field since 1994. The establishments of ICCOC and the Marine Station in Bungus, West Sumatera, were part of the MOU implementation.

The two nations have conducted researches on climate change in ICOCC.

For the Marine Station in Bungus, China has committed to contributing technology, oceanographic censor devices, and sending marine experts. The parties have also agreed to exchange information on marine research.
