Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia`s Sony Dwi Kuncoro failed to qualify for the quarterfinal round of the Vietnam Badminton Grand Prix Open as he was beaten by Sho Sasaki of Japan.

In the match in Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday Sony lost 15-21, 10-21 to Sasaki.

This was the first loss Sony suffered from Sasaki after always winning in the past two matches against the Japanese, namely at the Thomas Cup and Taiwan Grand Prix Gold in 2010.

Sony`s failure to advance to the quarterfinal round leaves Indonesia with only one player to represent it in the men`s single event in the next round, namely Alamsyah Yunus.

Alamsyah who is the fourth seeded reached the quarterfinal round after beating Wei Nan from Hong Kong. He would compete for a place in the semifinals against Ajay Jayaram of India who had beaten South Korean Yim Jong Woo 21-8, 21-15.

Indonesia`s women`s single player Aprilia Yuswandari meanwhile also had to pack up before reaching the quarterfinal round after she was beaten by Sindhu VP from India, 18-21, 19-21 in the earlier match.

In the mixed double event, Ricky Widianto/Shendy Puspa Irawati and Angga Pratama/Ryan Agung Saputar successfully proceeded to the quarterfinal round.

Ricky/Anggun qualified for the quarterfinals after defeating Chayut Triyachart/Yao Lei of Singapore, 12-21, 21-13, 21-18 while Angga/Ryan beat Terry Yeo/Liu Yu of China, 21-16,21-17.
