"The volcanic temblors indicate the energy supply from the magma chamber is still quite abundant. If these continue to happen, an eruption might occur," Head of Mount Lokon and Mahawu Observation Post of Kakaskasen Village, Tomohon, Farid Ruskanda Bina said here Thursday.
According to Farid, if the volcanic tremors continued to accumulate, the volcano might erupt again.
The post recorded one shallow volcanic tremor, eight deep volcanic tremors and nine harmonic tremors at 06.00 p.m to 12.00 a.m of local time, Wednesday (Sept 7). The tremor`s amplitude was recorded at 0.5-1 millimeters.
On Thursday, midnight to 6 a.m local time, shallow volcanic tremors occurred 13 times while a deep volcanic tremor was only recorded once.
The observation post also recorded two tectonic tremors, one a local tectonic tremor, and four harmonic tremors. The tremor`s amplitude reached 0.5-1 millimeters.
The Tompaluan Crater of Mount Lokon was reportedly gushing thick smoke at 9 a.me. This indicated that the thermal energy from the magma chamber had pierced through the surface, Farid said.
"Now we see smoke from the crater has become thinner. We presume the vent is clogged and hence, the energy has not been released entirely," Farid said.
Therefore, local people was warned to standby and keep away from the volcano. The save distance from Mount Lokon was set at a radius of 2.5 km from the Tompulan crater
The volcano status is still set at level II by the Volcanology and Geology Disaster Mitigation Center.
